Ringvorlesung: Value-Driven Software Design

Sustainable software products are based on the imperative to evaluate and understand the product from multiple perspectives: A technical reflection requires taking cultural, social, ecological and political perspectives into account. This is called an ethical deliberation. In our talk, we will locate the ethical ‘room for maneuver’ within the concrete digital artifact the individual engineer is working on. This will foster sustainable software development and thus foster a cultural change where ethical deliberation is an integral part of the decision making. Structurally, this needs to be embedded into the larger space of agile software development processes. We show how ethical deliberation can be embedded into one such agile methodology, Scrum, and thus empower and enable the engineers to explicate their ethical deliberations.
